Is There a Lighting Design Plan in Your Home Remodel?

When it comes to your Houston home’s remodel, have you considered a lighting design plan? If not, you’re missing out.

Think about how often you flip the light switches in your home. When you wake up, it’s probably the first thing you do. When you enter another room, you reach for the light switch. Before you go to bed, you switch off all the lights that have been turned on during the day.

Lighting is such an inherent part of our lives, yet we rarely give it a second thought. That is unless the power goes out or the light isn’t good enough for the task at hand. When you think about it, lighting magnifies our lifestyles. It’s one of the most vital tools in our everyday living. Doesn’t it warrant more attention in your home remodel?

What Does a Lighting Design Plan Consist Of?

Gone are the days when a monotonous and boring overhead lighting theme dominated the home. Today’s lighting is layered and thoughtfully planned and arranged.

Many people aren’t aware of the variety of details that need attention when creating a home lighting plan. You’ll want to check all the boxes on these important lighting considerations.

The type of fixtures you want.

Light fixtures are more than utilitarian details within each room. Lighting adds to the aesthetics within the walls of your home. Rather than be an afterthought, lighting should be front and center in your home remodeling plans.

One thing to think about with lighting fixtures is the type of fixture itself, be it recessed lighting, chandeliers, wall sconces, hanging pendants, or under-cabinet lights.

You’ll want to choose something that appeals to you and sets the mood you wish, while also giving extra consideration on how it’ll occupy the living space. For instance, in the kitchen, you’ll probably want under-cabinet lights to enhance your workspace when you prepare meals.

The lighting itself.

  • Accent lighting. Accent lights add visual interest to an object in the room. If you have a prized art piece, you’ll undoubtedly want to show it off, and accent lighting will help you do just that. But, there are practical ways to use accent lighting as well, such as illuminating a staircase to ensure safer navigation. Accent lighting usually consists of track lighting, wall fixtures, recessed lighting, or even a torchère Adding dimmers adds to the mood and the drama of accenting the features you desire.
  • Ambient lighting. Ambient light is often used as a primary lighting solution for the modern home. It fills a good part of a room and helps to guide you where you are. Ambient light can be natural, like the lighting that comes in through your windows from the sunlight. It can also be from the fixtures you choose for your home. Recessed lighting, chandeliers, ceiling fan lights, and track lighting are usually used as ambient light.
  • Task lighting. Task lighting helps you perform the functions you do every day in your home. For instance, if you have an island in your kitchen, you’ll probably want pendant lights to illuminate your workspace as you prep and cook. If you work a lot at home from a desk, no doubt, a task light is helpful. Table lamps are always lovely in the living room, and sometimes a task light is just what you need when reading before bedtime. Task lights can be under-counter lights, floor lamps and other types of lamps, recessed lights, and more. When incorporating a lighting plan into your remodel, think about the activities you do each day. Then make a list, so it’s not overlooked.

Convenience is everything when it comes to your lighting remodel.

For instance, if your living room has three points to enter, do you want to be able to turn the lights on at every approach? When falling asleep while reading a book in bed, wouldn’t it be nice to have a switch near your bed?

Better yet, what about a smart lighting solution like a Lutron Lighting System that allows you to control your home’s lights from your mobile device?

The Takeaway

Lighting is the design element that brings it all together. It can increase the functionality, ease of living, and ambiance of your living space. It should be everything you want it  to be and more.

Whether you simply want to tweak the lighting that’s already in your home or want a new design altogether, a thoughtful lighting design plan can help make it happen.
