Renovating and Updating

“Economical” builders cause more problems than they solve!

Recently we received this delightful note from a “Happy Houston Customer” who had this story to tell:

In April I did renovations on a condo before moving into the unit in May. One of the major problems with the condo was the lighting. It was truly awful — glaring halogen track lighting in the kitchen and single overhead light sources in all of the other rooms.

Ah, yes, the dreaded “track-lighting-from-hell” phenomena. No matter where you sit or stand in the room, it always seems to be blazing directly in your eyes. Poor design and a lack of consideration of sight lines can turn an otherwise beautiful fixture into an obnoxious horror that everybody hates.

The lack of creativity shown with one central fixture per room is the sign of a builder who was just “trying to get the job done” for the lowest price possible. They won’t even consider perimeter lighting or cove lighting that would add elegance or style. Their biggest worry is the bottom line.

The work that Illuminations Lighting Design did for me has completely transformed the space. Tom came over to do the consultation and then designed a new lighting plan.

I now have under-cabinet lighting throughout the kitchen, and recessed LED ceiling lights (all on dimmers) in the kitchen, living room, dining room, and both bedrooms. In addition, we have alcove lighting in the bedrooms and living space.

And that’s because this is what the space demanded in order to be livable. Have a look at successful, beautiful designs in our gallery.

When you think about it, one central light source means that if you walk to a wall or corner, you’re standing in your own shadow! How could that possibly be considered useful?

There needs to be sufficient ambient light to provide a shadowless environment, or if there are shadows, it should be for drama and effect, not because of lack of understanding. It is a graceless and awful builder who makes it possible to defeat the proper lighting of a room just by entering it!

The difference is extraordinary — like a different space altogether. My renovation work on this project was extensive — new flooring and redesigned bathrooms. But with all of the work I had done — this lighting was the single most important aspect.

And we thank you for calling us to consult and design with you. We’re thrilled that you love the result, and we’re even happier that we were able to remove that artless faux pas from the original builder!

I also want to say that my experience with the Illuminations company was great. They started and finished the project on time, and they were very careful with my new hardwood floor — which I greatly appreciated. I definitely recommend this company. Great job!

And we loved working with you! Thanks for sharing your experience with us so we can share it with others.

The Takeaway

You may be burdened with the lowest-cost, most uncreative lighting the builder could dig up out of an industrial lighting supply catalogue, but there is no reason that you have to stick with it. Lighting redesign can be surprisingly economical—and still transform the entire feel of a home.

Don’t let a cheapskate builder win and dictate your lighting. You’re not powerless—you can have it your way—and your home can look fabulous. This is why builders often consult with us to design lighting in new homes. Good builders know that their strengths lie elsewhere.

Any contractors worth their salt know when they need to employ an outside expert. That is why they come to us, and it is why you should talk to us when you need a redesign, too. Give us a call today!
